ABACC at the 10th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT)
ABACC participated, as an observer, in the 10th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, held in New York, USA, from 1 to 26 August 2022.
Representatives of ABACC followed the plenary discussions and the meetings of the Main Committees, in particular Committee II, dedicated mainly to reviewing the functioning of the Treaty in terms of safeguards, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and nuclear-weapon-free zones.
A statement was also made during a plenary session highlighting: the successful application over the 30 years of ABACC of the Common System for Accounting and Control of Nuclear Materials (SCCC) of Argentina and Brazil, the compliance with ABACC’s verification activities during the COVID-19 pandemic, the excellent coordination relationship with the IAEA in the implementation of bilateral and international safeguards, the relevance of technical cooperation with organizations/institutions.
The statements by the representatives of Argentina and Brazil highlighted ABACC as a successful model of regional cooperation and verification of the exclusively peaceful use of nuclear energy, as well as the construction of mutual trust.
On August 9, on the margins of the Conference, ABACC at the invitation of EURATOM participated in the event “Safeguarding in a Regional Arrangement – The EURATOM and the ABACC Experience”. It was highlighted the respective mandates, objectives and activities in the application of regional verification systems, the contribution to the IAEA’s international safeguards, the relevance of cooperation with the IAEA in the implementation of international safeguards, and the technical cooperation of ABACC, EURATOM, Joint Research Center (JRC) in state-of-the-art technologies for effective application of verification.
